In keeping with the Club’s mission-vision of promoting the hobby of scale modeling in the country, IPMS Philippines Bert Anido conducted an outreach program last summer through a modeling workshop for children, held at the PIA Building in Pasig.

There were about 20 participants between the ages of 6 to 19 (along with their fathers) eager to learn and get started in building a model.  Several members of the Club volunteered to facilitate and provide assistance to the participants.  The kits used were various 1/72 Hobby Boss Easy Build kits.

By the end of the session, all the participants gathered together with their “kuyas” from IPMS Philippines BA proudly showing off their finished models.
Even though their work is not exactly master class, everybody showed great potential in building and given the right guidance and tools, may one day become masters in the hobby.

This outreach program will certainly not be the last.
The Club would like to acknowledge the following:
•    Nonoy “Mr. Clean” Servañez for taking the initiative in making this workshop possible.
•    Mr. Shakespeare “Shakes” Chan of Lil’s Hobby Center for providing the kits used by the participants.

PMS Philippines Bert Anido was given the honor and privilege to take part in two significant events of the Philippine Air Force. These are the Airpower Symposium sponsored by the Philippine Air Force last June 24, and the first ever Philippine Aviation Summit in July 1, at the PAF Aerospace Museum at Villamor Air Base.

The Club set up a static display of aircraft that carried Philippine Army Air Corps (PAAC) and Philippine Air Force (PAF) livery throughout the history of the service in addition to some “what-ifs” which have caught the eye of several participants to the symposium. One exhibitor, Elbit Systems, even “borrowed” a what-if model (Tim “”Buccaneer” Maceren’s AH-1W Cobra) to promote their products in the hopes that the PAF will take interest in it.

Some veteran PAF pilots were attracted to the exhibit and went out of their way to sit down and chat with the members present on their experiences with some of the aircraft they have flown that were displayed as models. One PAF officer did actually test fly the Gripen and gave rave reviews about it!

The best part came when the Commanding General of the PAF, Lt. Gen. Oscar Rabena made a beeline to the exhibit (without stopping by the other exhibitors) and marveled at the models on display and intimated to the members present that he came from the 15th Strike Wing, the Club’s “friend” from the PAF and has flown the MG520. Through the initiative of Mel “Webster” Silvestre, the Club has volunteered to build an MG520 that resembled his mount (coming soon).

At the Philippine Aviation Summit the exhibit has expanded to include non-PAF subjects. The day was significant in two ways: it was the 62nd anniversary of the PAF and the formal launching of the Aviation Society of the Philippines. The event proper commenced at around 1 pm and started with a raffle of a Rolls Royce (courtesy of Mr. Joy Roa) and a symposium followed with Secretary of National Defense Gilbert Teodoro as Guest of Honor.

The Club was treated to a history lecture of Philippine aviation by Mr. Avelino Zapanta, President of SEAir (and father of Club member Titus “Surefire” Zapanta, and was therefore dubbed “Daddy Surefire”). Just like the previous week, PAF officers spent a lot of time in the Club’s exhibit area to exchanging stories with the Club members.

By the end of the events, the Club left in high spirits and are looking forward to be back again next year!

The Club would like to acknowledge the following:

Maj. Armando Ardenoso, member of the Air Staff for accommodating the Club and regaling everyone with his experiences (he has the distinction of being the first PAF pilot to fly the Hornet, and bested the American flyboys in the gunnery competition).

Gen. Dan Francia (Ret.) President of the Philippine Aviation Society for inviting the Club to the events.

Lt. Gen. Oscar Rabena, Commanding General of the PAF for being such a genial host.

Mel “Webster” Silvestre for taking the point for the Club in this

Members of IPMS Philippines Bert Anido were accorded a special treat when they were given an exclusive tour of the aircraft used during the recently-concluded Balikatan exercises for 2009 at the Haribon Airfield in Clark Air Base.

The adventurous group got an eyeful as US Marine AV-8B Harriers took off on the way to their carrier USS Essex, and were given a tour of the parked F-16 CGs that came all the way from Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

At the end of the tour, the group was lavished with a sumptuous lunch courtesy of Angeles City-based member David Mason who was instrumental in making this visit possible.  The club wishes to thank Capt. Mason and his family for all the efforts he has exerted for making this happen as well as for his hospitality.

Special thanks also go out to Capt. Clouthier for guiding the group to the flight line and S/Sgt. Koravich of the USAF who gave a very informative lecture on the F-16.  The club is likewise grateful for the assistance rendered by Capt. Randy Pascua of the PAF.

IPMS Philippines BA Goes to the Movies!

February 10, 2009 | Comments Off | leadarticle

By Aaron “4-eyes” Ronquillo

valkyrie_posterStarting the new year with a bang, IPMS Philippines Bert Anido (BA) has been requested by the management of SM to put up a static model exhibit at the Cinema area which will run until the 25th of February.  The exhibit is part of promoting the release of the war-drama-suspense movie Valkyrie starring Tom Cruise.  The movie centers on the story of Lt. Col. Klaus von Stauffenberg, one of the officers in the German military involved in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler.  Upon receiving the request from SM, the Club immediately went into action full blast.  The announcement was put out in the Club’s Yahoo mailing list for models needed and during the February 8 meeting, several members have already brought in their models that they wanted to put in the exhibit.  In keeping with the theme of the movie, the models to be displayed were to be World War II German subjects.

February 9 was the ingress date.  Several volunteers already began assembling at Lil’s Hobby Center around 8 pm and brought in more models.  At about 9 pm, the volunteers buckled down to work.  With the help of Prez Chopper’s people, SM’s maintenance crew and even our chief patron, Shakes Chan, tables and panels were brought in and set up.  In about 2 hours, the setup was complete even while the last full show in the theaters was still ongoing.  Everyone left for home in high spirits and are looking forward to watch the movie once it is shown (Valkyrie opens on February 11, see you there!).
