Trumpeter 1/32 Mig-23 (pre-production)

Disclaimer:
•    Kit came in without manual, decals, photo-etched and film parts.
•    Finished model is not completely finished. Several small parts were not installed pending the release of the actual instruction manual.
•    Decals used came from trumpeter su-27 kit.
•    Paint scheme copied from Internet sources.

First Impressions
The kit came in a huge transparent plastic bag. Several of the sprues came in two’s even if only one was needed. There were also “lost” sprues that are from the trumpeter 1/48 me-262 kit.
The parts breakdown was traditional and nothing was surprised. Aside from a complete mig-23, a sprue for an engine trolley (similar to Tamiya 1/32 F-16 kit) was also included, as well as your normal arsenal of weapons that come from a trumpeter kit.
Also included are metal and rubber parts for the landing gear.
Build
After sorting out the kit parts and giving all the parts a good detergent bath, I proceeded to assembling the kit. There were no surprises as everything went well together. Detail and panel lines were good, comparable to the trump A-10 kit.
One area where I have some concerns is with the engine and fuselage section. The kit intends the fuselage to be detachable thus revealing the engine inside. The two fuselage halves are joined together by plastic pegs on the tail section and holes on the front section. As per my assembling I found that this would be difficult because the join line will be very visible. I ended up gluing the two sections together.
I also needed to pay attention to the weight balance of the kit. Given that the kit sits down with the nose elevated and the complete engine at the back, the natural tendency is for the kit to sit on its tail. I had to add significant ballast on the nose to balance out the kit.
After a lot of guessing and consulting Internet sources, assembly was finished with relative ease and a lot of enjoyment. The kit put together nicely.
Painting was straightforward and I did my usual finishing on the kit.
Conclusion
I thought the kit was ok overall. In fact, I enjoyed building this more than the trump f-18 super hornet. I’m waiting for a copy of the manual to completely finished the kit altogether.

With the help of some new members, we were able to fill up all the tables with entries and exhibits.  Our brothers from IPMS Philippines Bert Anido came through as well with their entries and exhibits.  Thanks guys for your much-needed help!

Ingress went smoothly all day Wednesday, February 3, 2010.  Vino “Shrikes” Nañagas traveled up by bus and arrived around 2:00pm and was literally a huge help during set-up.  He came up early this time because he couldn’t stay for the whole event, owing to his son’s birthday on Saturday, February 6, 2010.  How about that for dedication? Ingress was not very difficult at all, mostly the members’ time was occupied making minor repairs to models damaged enroute to the the display area and then finding an appropriate place on a display table to best admire it. Kudos to the Baguio Country Club Staff for keeping us warm with a seemingly endless supply of coffee and donuts.

The center section of the display was dominated by big kits, including a number of 1:32 scale aircraft, Frank Ching’s 1:200 IJN Yamato and Anthony de Leon’s 1:72 Type VIIC U-Boat and 1/35 Elco Torpedo Boat. This, however, does not mean to say that the smaller scales didn’t make an impression: there were two 1:144 armor kits and a 1:144 scale P-51D, all of which could fit comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The show was inaugurated by Baguio’s Vice-Mayor, Daniel Fariñas, ably assisted by Baguio Country Club General Manager Anthony de Leon & IPMS Baguio Vice-President Atty. Sam Gallardo.  The Special Operations Group (SOG) of the BCC & BAC was on hand as honor guard during the ceremonies, all clad in very sharp Class-A uniforms complete with stars over their jump wings, campaign ribbons and even a presidential unit citation.

The event was well covered, both by the broadcast media and print reporters and photographers.  Officers of IPMS Baguio were interviewed on what scale modeling was all about & it’s relevance to daily life.  These were aired on primetime news on both ABS-CBN Baguio & GMA Northern Luzon.  A photo of Anthony de Leon & Vice-Mayor Fariñas going around the exhibit appeared on Philippine Star on February 5, 2010.

Visitors included dignitaries from Baguio, senior officers of the Philippine Military Academy and students from the various schools and universities around Baguio.

Capt. Bing “Stingray” Villena brought up three of his wooden ships, which continued to wow the visitors during the three-day event.  Thank you sir!

Our good friend Woody took two tables to show off his die-cast collection featuring the AC Cobra and another table highlighting his die-cast collection of various Batmobile versions and collection of Batman comic books.  Well done Woody!

A new addition this year was the Baguio RC Cars group who displayed their racing & drifting expertise.  Some of our members who are also into RC racing said they will bring up their RC cars next year so they can have a friendly race with their Baguio compatriots.

A special and very interesting quick-build was held as an additional event.  Commencing at 9:00am of Saturday, February 6, 2010, nine members of IPMS Baguio competed amongst themselves to determine who can finish a 1:72 kit by 5:00pm.  The model was the 1:72 Hobby Boss Easy Assemby P-51C Mustang, sponsored by Anthony de Leon.  Each contestant was given a table, with individual fluorescent lighting & electrical outlets for their air compressors.  Judges Mel Silvestre and Jim Gonzales individually inspected all submitted entries by 5:00pm.  Seven contestants chose the natural metal finish option of a P-51B flown by Capt. D. Gentile of the 336th FS, 4th FG, USAAF.  One competitor chose the RAF P-51C with tail number FZ152, in late-war RAF camouflage with invasion stripes.  The last competitor, Mr. Hunter, still had his kit in the box, which prompted Mel “Webster” Silvestre to comment that it was supposed to be an Out Of The Box competition, not Still In The Box.  Just goes to show what a slow builder this fellow is.  The entry of Chris Banania was adjudged the most complete after 8 hours of building.  Congratulations Chris!

Eight Special Awards were given away; Best In Show, Tamiya’s Choice, Hasegawa’s Choice, Trumpeter’s Choice, Italeri’s Choice, Revell’s Choice, Dragon’s Choice, and Hobby Boss’ Choice.  Glass trophies with the colorful logos of the manufacturers were handed out to the winners.  Congratulations guys!

The show was culminated by the traditional raffle, with kit prizes donated by Mr. Shakespeare Chan of Lil’s Hobby Center.  Thanks you sir!  Mr. Wrandell “Warden” Selda, ably representing Shakes, presided over the raffle & awarded the kits to the winners.  In appreciation of his efforts to promote scale-modeling in Baguio, Anthony de Leon received a surprise, a Trumpeter 1:32 Eurofighter.  A well-deserved award Sir Anthony!

At the moment, there are 23 sprues present in the usual light gray. Now do remember these are test shots which means, they are probably the initial test batches before full production so a few flashes, mold imperfections and short shots are excused. I know humbly leave it to the viewer to look in detail at each sprue. I made some close ups especially the variant that I recall haven’t been kitted yet.

Of course, what’s likely in everyone’s minds is: Is the kit accurate? I’d say on initial bat: HELL YEAH! From most of my surfing, the 1/32 Me262 by trumpeter is hailed as one the most accurate and detailed representation of the aircraft, and based on the sprue, it appears to be a pantograph version of it.

I wish of course to thank our club, IPMS-Bert Anido for again giving me the chance to review and build this kit, Shakes of Lil’s Hobby, and of course Trumpeter for giving me, and our club these opportunities to see their upcoming kits.

NOW ON TO THE BUILD!

1. Eligibility. — The contest is open to all scale modelers. Models that have won either First, Second or Third Place honors in previous IPMS Philippines-Bert Anido nationals and IPMS Baguio competitions are not permitted to enter.

2. Content requirements.— All entries must be made of at least Fifty percent (50%) plastic* or resin content.  Models predominantly made of die-cast, brass, stainless steel or other photo-etched metals are eligible to enter after the appropriate content screening. All pre-built and pre-painted models are absolutely prohibited.

3. Screening and Classification Committee. — All entries will be screened by the Screening and Classification Committee, IPMS Philippines-BA Baguio Chapter, upon ingress. The Committee shall classify and group all entries in their appropriate categories after the termination of the Pre-registration period, which will be set at least one week before the intended contest date.

The Screening and Classification Committee reserves the right to exclude any entry from a particular category or class or to altogether disqualify an entry for just grounds such as ineligibility, obscenity, excessive violence, and other socially unacceptable themes. The Committee likewise reserves the right to require the removal of certain parts for content inspection as well as the removal of model bases, cases or model parts from any entry.

The decision of the Committee shall be final.

4. Awards. — Each category will have three winners, namely: Champion, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up.  In cases where there are less than three entries, a sole entrant merits the highest award, and only two entries will result in the awarding of the top two awards to the entrants. The Organizers reserve the right to modify, drop, or create categories in the event of limited entries.

There will be a Peoples’ Choice or Best In Show award given to the entry garnering the highest number of favorable votes as cast by all participants and spectators for the duration of the voting period as set by the Organizers. The Peoples’ Choice award shall be on top of any other honor/s received by the entry during the contest.

An award for the best Tamiya, Trumpeter, Hasegawa, Hobby Boss, Revell & Dragon model will also be given to the entrant whose model is selected by the judges from among all entries.

5. Contest Area.

a) Where applicable, unauthorized write-ups or pictures are prohibited on the competition table. Only name plates measuring up to 4 in x 2 in indicating the subject, scale and kit shall be allowed. Model builders’ and/or owners’ names are prohibited from appearing on such name plates.

b) All special effects, such as moving or motorized parts, lights and similar contraptions must be turned off at all times until after the judging period.

c) All participants are strictly not allowed inside the competition area during judging unless so permitted by the Organizers upon just and valid grounds. A violation of this rule shall be a ground for disqualification of all the offending participant’s entries.

Individual entry scores will be posted after the judging period.

d) The Organizers shall not be responsible for the loss of any entry, or damage to the same, not attributable to the latter’s fault.

For the protection of the participants and their entries, the Organizers reserve the right to bar entry or cause the exclusion of any person/s and their respective entries, if any, from the contest area for the entire duration of the event for such causes as unruly conduct, vandalism, mischief, etc. The Organizers likewise reserve the right to bar entry to any person/s and their respective entries if, in the discretion of the Organizer, the same would be in the greater interest of the participants and the competition.

JUDGING OF ENTRIES

1. The following criteria shall be utilized in the judging of entries:

FIXED WING AND ROTARY AIRCRAFT, ARMOR AND SHIPS:
Assembly/construction 25%
Paint job/overall finish 25%
Detail 25%
Authenticity 25%

SCI-FI AND FICTION ENTRIES:
Assembly/construction 25%
Paint job/overall finish 25%
Detailing 25%
Creativity 25%

CAR ENTRIES:
Assembly/construction 50%
Paint job/overall finish 50%

2. Judging of entries shall be done by qualified judges. The judges’ decision shall be final.

PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS

1. Out-of-the-Box (OOB) categories are subject to stricter construction rules, and with only a few restricted exemptions, must be built according to kit instruction specifications. Only those kit modifications/upgrades exempted per category are allowed; all other modifications will disqualify the entry from the OOB category and will instead be classified as a modified entry. In addition to Rules Common to each category, OOB entries shall be subjected to Additional Rules for OOB entries in their respective categories.

2. Modified categories provide no limits as to the amount of modifications/upgrades made on the entry. Bases, ground accessories and stands (except where allowed), and effects, however, are prohibited.

3. Categories without distinction between OOB and Modified entries shall be considered as Open, and shall not be subjected to restrictions on modifications other than those listed in their respective Rules.

RULES PER CATEGORY

RULES COMMON TO ALL FIXED-WING AIRCRAFT MODEL

ENTRIES

1. Figures limited to pilot and/or co-pilot and/or flight crew only, all of whom must be seated inside the aircraft. All other figures whether on or around the aircraft are not allowed.

2. Aircraft must stand up on its own gear struts or mounted on kit-provided stand; Provided, that flying boats and seaplanes shall be allowed to rest on display cradles; Provided further, that simple rods or similar simple devices intended to support tail-heavy entries shall likewise be allowed; Provided, finally, that mirror bases meant solely to allow a view of the undersides are allowed so long as they are proportionate in size to the entry.

3. Dollies, auxiliary power units (APUs), oxygen tanks, tow bars, wheel chocks and other equipment are prohibited. Boarding ladders must not touch the ground, and maintenance platforms and ladders are altogether prohibited.

4. Display bases of any sort are prohibited, except as provided in Rule 2 hereof.

5. All aircraft parts, weapons and accessories must be attached to, or placed on top of, the model. No aircraft part or accessory shall be allowed to be displayed beneath or around the model.

Simulated gunfire, smoke, or missile/rocket launches are prohibited.

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR OUT-OF-THE-BOX (OOB) FIXED WING

AIRCRAFT MODEL ENTRIES

6. Kits must be built in accordance with the instructions. Absolutely no modifications other than those specified hereunder are allowed. Copies of the instruction sheet shall be attached to the participant’s registration form and submitted together with the said form during the pre-registration period.

7. Only the following shall be allowed:

a. Drilling out gun barrels and exhaust tubes
b. Changing of markings/decals

8. Entries with modifications not falling within the foregoing parameters shall be entered in the modified category.

RULES COMMON TO ALL HELICOPTERS/ ROTARY WING MODEL ENTRIES

1. Figures are limited to pilot, co-pilot and/or gunner/flight crew only, all of whom must be seated inside the aircraft. All other figures whether on or around the aircraft are not allowed.

2. Aircraft must stand up on its own skids or gear struts or mounted on kit-provided stand; Provided, that simple rods or similar simple devices intended to support tail-heavy entries shall be allowed; Provided, further, that mirror bases meant solely to allow a view of the undersides are allowed so long as they are proportionate in size to the entry.

3. Dollies, auxiliary power units (APUs), oxygen tanks, tow bars, wheel chocks and other equipment are prohibited; Provided, that towing wheels attached to helicopters with skids are allowed. Maintenance platforms and ladders are altogether prohibited.

4. Display bases of any sort are prohibited. If the aircraft cannot be removed from the display base, or if the participant so elects, the model shall be entered in the diorama category.

5. All aircraft parts or accessories must be attached to, or placed on top of, the model. No aircraft part or accessory shall be allowed to be displayed beneath or around the model.

Simulated gunfire, smoke, or missile/rocket launches are prohibited.

RULES COMMON TO ALL ARMOR MODEL ENTRIES

1. Figures are allowed on the entry; Provided, that, the figures must constitute the vehicle’s primary crew and placed in their appropriate stations (hatches, seats, etc.); and Provided, further, that in no case shall the number of figures exceed four (4) on each entry. It is understood that the figures on the vehicle will not be included in the judging of the entry.

2. All tracked entries must have linked tracks (meaning forming a full loop around the road wheels), whether full vinyl, segmented, or individual track links. Vehicles with shed tracks are not allowed.

3. All vehicle parts and accessories must be attached to the entry; Provided, that accessories shall be subjected to further restrictions for OOB entries as provided below. No vehicle part or accessory shall be allowed to be displayed beneath or around the model. Simulated gunfire, smoke, or missile/rocket launches are prohibited.

4. Display bases of any sort are prohibited. If the vehicle cannot be removed, the entry shall be accepted for exhibit.

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR OUT-OF-THE-BOX (OOB) ARMOR MODEL ENTRIES

5. Kits must be built in accordance with the instructions. Only accessories such as stowage, bags, etc. provided in the kit are allowed. Absolutely no modifications other than those specified hereunder are allowed. Copies of the instruction sheet shall be attached to the participant’s registration form and submitted together with the said form during the pre-registration period.

6. Only the following modifications shall be allowed:

a. Drilling out gun barrels and exhaust tubes
b. Changing of markings/decals
c. Antennas

7. Entries with modifications not falling within the foregoing parameters shall be entered in the modified category.

RULES COMMON TO ALL SHIP MODEL ENTRIES

1. Ships may either be full-hulled or waterline.  Ships depicted as traversing waters or rivers shall be allowed; provided, that the entry shall be judged on the merits of the ship alone and not of the base or other environs.

2. Simulated gunfire, smoke effects from funnels or hits are prohibited.

RULES COMMON TO ALL CAR ENTRIES

1. Cars may be presented as either full body or exploded-view (parts are disassembled to show interior details) No figures are allowed on or near the entry. Entries with figures shall be accepted for exhibit if the same cannot be removed or if the participant so elects.

2. The cars must be available for full inspection (e.g., clear view of bottom of vehicle is possible) by the judges

All removed parts must be placed on the base. Non-related items such as tools, oils and fuel, etc., are prohibited from the base.

RULES COMMON TO ALL SCI-FICTION AND FICTION ENTRIES

1. The Science Fiction category shall include all types of space, air, water and ground craft, Piloted Mobile Suits with cockpits, Fiction or fantasy figures and other resin and vinyl science fiction kits.

2. Participants are to provide a graphic of the original base kit, with an exception to the figures where this becomes an option, no matter how heavily modified the entry is along with the entry form. It does not necessarily mean that a scanned copy of the manual or the manual itself is to be submitted, but any material showing the original configuration will do. Model kits based on video games can use a screen capture of the game where the kit is being shown.

CONTEST PRE-REGISTRATION RULES

1. Pre-registration.

There will be a contest pre-registration starting on January 16, 2010.  Participants will be required to submit prior to the contest the duplicate forms of their prospective entries, together with the participant’s contact number/s.

It is understood that the pre-registered entries will be completed and ready for viewing on or before the scheduled contest.  Please email all registration forms to ipmsbaguio@yahoo.com on or before Feb. 2, 2010.

IMPORTANT: Entries not pre-registered according to these Rules at least one week before the scheduled event shall not be allowed to participate in the competition but may be accepted for exhibit purposes.

2. Documentation.

Participants are encouraged to submit, together with their forms, two (2) copies of an itemized documentation of the work they have done on each particular entry.

Such documentation should be typewritten or printed legibly on not more than three (3) sheets of long white bond paper, and documentation for only one (1) entry is allowed to be typewritten or printed on each sheet/s. Photos which the participant desires to insert should be scanned or photocopied and made part of the same sheet/s.

The Organizers reserve the right to exclude or require the condensation of excessively long documentations. The names of the modeler/s and/or owner/s should not appear on such documentation.

Documentations will not be the sole basis for judging entries; entries will be judged on their own merits. Documentations will be strictly for judges’ use only, and will be kept confidential from the general public. Illegal and deliberate circulation of documentations within the contest area may be a ground for the disqualification of all the participant’s entries, upon the sole discretion of the Organizers.

CATEGORIES

Fixed wing aircraft, rotary aircraft and armor shall be categorized as falling under either master division or amateur.  Participants who have previously won first place in any scale model contest, meet or invitational involving any of the above-stated categories are barred from joining the amateur class of that particular category.  Further, no distinction shall be made in the master’s division as to whether the model is out of the box, modified or scratchbuilt.

6th IPMS Baguio Entry Form

February brings another opportunity to come up to Baguio and enjoy the scenery and the cool, clean air.  Take this opportunity to relax & experience the camaraderie of our northern brothers and the warmth and beauty of the people of Baguio.

Ingress for the members began November 8 at the Club Headquarters in Pasig. Members of the Registration and Screening Committees buckled down to work which lasted until Saturday evening to lessen the backlog on the actual day of Ingress. On Sunday, Ingress Day, entries from non-members started coming in around the afternoon of mall hours (it is speculated majority were watching the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight in the morning). The Club joined forces with their friends from MechaPinoy who were also holding their internal contest. In the spirit of “Bayanihan,” both clubs helped each other out in setting up the exhibit area which covered the lobby facing EDSA and the Atrium until the wee hours of the morning.

The next day saw the official launch of the Nationals in a ribbon cutting ceremony with renowned media personality Tina Monzon-Palma doing the honors along with Ms. Lily Libi Uy of Lil’s Hobby Center. The exhibit area began to fill up with models as more and more entries kept coming in until Tuesday evening. Our friends from Open Acxss once more took the cudgels for electronically registering the entries.

The exhibit showcased a mix of old and new centerpieces beginning with the Kido Butai diorama of Frank “Chopper” Ching featuring the Imperial Japanese Strike Fleet on its way to Pearl Harbor. Two new exhibits were put up, in the form of a 1/8 scale of an SE.5 British fighter of World War I courtesy of Titus “Surefire” Zapanta and the equally impressive 1/44 scale Baoa Qu diorama by MechaPinoy. This year’s Nationals also saw more big scale aircraft on display proving the popularity of the scale.

The show brought together friends who have known each other in the forum boards. Personalities like Jessie Arias (yolk24) from the beautiful island of Boracay and Anthony De Leon of IPMS Baguio traveled a long way to grace the event and get to meet the people behind the codenames in the boards. The event was also covered by Net 25 for the show Tribe who interviewed several of the participants. The Nationals was also graced by our friend Mr. Jackson Xiao, the Personnel Relations Manager of Trumpeter who likewise brought in the latest test shots that gave everybody a taste of what is to come off Trumpeter’s assembly lines.

There were also special events in the Nationals besides MechaPinoy’s Formula 144 contest. The Club hosted a mini model workshop for the children of Bantay Mr. Xiao was on hand to donate kits for these children and several Club members played big brother to these kids as they built their kits with such gusto and they left smiling. In addition, Perry “Chuckie” Javier and his friends at the Buhay Na Kasaysayan reenactment society did a display of early Philippine military uniforms and conducted a lecture on the topic, making corrections on the errors on the depiction of Philippine soldiers in art, film and even in museums. They gamely posed with visitors for photos during and at the end of the lecture.

As in previous Nationals, the high quality of the models meant the judges had their work cut out as they tried to determine the best among the best entries. The awarding ceremonies saw perennial winners once again showing everyone why they are still the best such as Jim “Bigman” Gonzales, “Super” Mario Prado and Michael “Tikhboy” Avendano (aircraft); Joseph “Bubbles” Carunungan and Oliver “Twisty” Sia (military vehicles); Jon “Junior” Bersabal and Jojo “Morpheuz” Janolo (ships); and Ed “Sweetooth” Porciuncula (cars). At the same time, newer faces began to emerge such as Tim “Buccaneer” Maceren, Andre “Scandyflick” Palma, Nonoy “Mr. Clean” Servanez and “Monchit” Campos and Raphy “Panzerjaeger” Marbella also showed they are rising stars. Karl “Fritz” Nualla, a perennial winner in the armor and figures category “graduated” to Mecha and it showed when he won First Place in the Mecha division proving he is a SEAL (for the complete list of winners, click here).

The awarding ceremonies were also made memorable with an intermission number from up and coming singer Monique Luwalhati and “security” provided by Philippine Outpost of the 501st (Imperial Stormtrooper) Legion. After the ceremonies, everybody eagerly had their pictures taken with these troopers.

As the 7th Nationals came to a close, the enthusiasm has not died down among the Club members. Lessons learned will be carried forward for the 8th Nationals, and memories to be cherished were made and hoped to be repeated again. It was a truly “funtastic” week!
